Losmandy German Equatorial Mounts

Losmandy is best known for their excellent German Equatorial Mounts. These mounts are very different from the nowadays ubiquitous Chinese mounts, in many respects:
- they offer a much better load-per-weight ratio
- they offer much better tracking performance
- they share a beautiful, elegant CNC machined design. Most visible parts are made of anodized aluminium, giving these mounts a very clean look
- they have friction clutches - a big bonus for observing comfort
- despite all this they are very affordable

Easy Payment: We offer our customers several easy and fast payment methods. You will receive exact payment details when ordering or on request!

Losmandy GM 8 German Equatorial Mount
a very portable mount for telescopes up to 15kgs

The Losmandy GM 8 can be loaded with up to 15kgs telescope weight. Its compact design and moderate weight of approx. 11kgs make this mount highly portable. Setup and breakdown are quick and easy.

In order to fully utilize the mechanical capacity of the mount the large Losmandy-format dovetail clamp system is used.

Friction clutches replace the more classical clamps found in most other mounts. In order to move the mount around you will not have to search for tiny clamp handles in the dark - just push the mount in whatever direction you choose!

Scope of Delivery:

- Equatorial head with controller and stepper motors
- adjustable height tripod
- 3.5kg counterweight

Additional Information

The mount features PEC (periodic error correction) and TVC (programmable DEC backlash compensation). In addition the mount has a port for autoguiders.

The panel has a diamond push button pattern and RA and DEC reversing switches. The mount can of course be used both on the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
Tracking Precision

A word on what we consider good tracking performance. It is our experience that practically no mount under 10,000 or even 20,000 Euros can be left unguided for longer exposures. The mechanical precision required herefore is too expensive. It is therefore common to guide a mount during longer exposures, either manually through an illuminated reticle eyepiece or automatically with an autoguider camera.

Ease of guiding is not determined by the size of the periodic error of a mount. Be it 5", 10" or even 50" - this doesn't matter; you need to correct for it anyway. What does matter though is how fast this error occurs. In cheaper mounts the error tends to occur rapidly, giving you or your autoguider a hard time compensating for it. In our experience this is where Losmandy mounts excel: The error occurs very slowly, giving you plenty of time to correct before you would see any streaks on the photo.

Losmandy G 11 German Equatorial Mount
Losmandy's Mainstay mount - easily portable when disassembled - for telescopes up to 30kgs

The image shows the G-11 equatorial head with optional deluxe clutches (LO CKS) for RA and DEC

The ultra-heavy duty tripod of the Losmandy G-11 can be disassembled without tools within a few moments. Broken down into its components the entire G-11 is very easily portable - more so than e.g. an EQ-6

Losmandy G 11

This mount is Losmandy's most popular mount, for various reasons. It combines more than any other mount we know of many great features:
- great load capacity
- ease of use
- great tracking performance (Further Information)
- good portability
- beautiful design
- excellent workmanship

Due to its clever design and great workmanship the mount offers a surprising load capacity with a relatively low weight and size of the mount itself. Broken down into its components the mount is easily portable. Tracking precision is very good, approximately 5" according to the manufacturer.

Friction clutches replace the more classical clamps found in most other mounts. In order to move the mount around you will not have to search for tiny clamp handles in the dark - just push the mount in whatever direction you choose!

The mount comes equipped with the large Losmandy-format dovetail clamp system. Various dovetail plates are offered to fit the mount.

We always sell the mount with the precision worm gears as a standard.

On the left image you can see the control panel of the G-11. All ports and buttons are ergonomically placed. By putting most of the electronics in a separate panel attached to the tripod the hand controller itself becomes very light and compact.

Encoders for the Losmandy G-11

With the Gemini GoTo system the mount is a powerful platform with automated object positioning (GoTo). Some users prefer manual control, though.

Digital setting circles and encoders are a clever alternative to full GoTo. Further information on request.
