Adaptors for Eyepiece Projection and Prime Focus Photography

All adaptors are made of metal and precisely machined. All relevant surfaces are black.

What is Prime Focus Photography?

Prime focus photography can only be done with SLR or DSLR cameras or other cameras that do not have an objective lens. Then the telescope itself serves as a tele lens for the camera. If your telescope has a focal length of 1000mm for example it serves as a 1000mm tele lens.

What is Eyepiece Projection Photography?

An eyepiece is put between the camera and the telescope by means of a suitable adaptor. Then the eyepiece serves to enhance the magnification (or the effective focal length) of the telescope.

The adaptors here are explicitly meant for SLR and DSLR cameras without an integrated objective lens. Compact digital cameras also require eyepiece projection, but different adaptors are used for that purpose.

Several Adaptor Versions Available

Many of these adaptors can be combined with one another. For instance the TS FA 1 and the TS PA T together form the TS PA 1 (see image above). If you need an eyepiece projection adaptor with two different telescope connections then you can buy one of the fitting PA units and add only the missing FA units to attach the adaptor to other telescopes.

In addition to these adaptors you will usually need a T-ring for your SLR or DSLR camera. We offer T-rings for most common SLR cameras.

C-Mount Adaptors

C-Mount Adaptors for Telescope Connection

The C-mount thread is frequently used in CCTV cameras. You can of course also connect such a camera to a telescope to use it as a very long focal length tele lens.

Variable Eyepiece Projection and Prime Focus Adaptor

Variable eyepiece projection adaptor and 1.25" prime focus adaptor

When doing eyepiece projection photography magnification is determined by the eyepiece used and the distance between eyepiece and camera. In normal projection adaptors the distance is fixed.

The variable projection adaptor has a slide tube to allow the user to adjust the distance. As a side-effect the inside diameter of the variable projection adaptor is a little bit larger than in the regular projection adaptor, so you can use slightly larger eyepieces.

Two Adaptors in One:

The TS VPA 1 (see price list below) consists of two adaptors. The 1.25" barrel can be unscrewed and used separately as a prime focus adaptor.

The other half is the variable adaptor with T2 threads on both sides (female on male). This adaptor can also be used as a variable T2 extension tube (31.7mm clear aperture).

The big advantage of the variable eyepiece projection adaptor is that you can finely adjust the magnification according to your needs.

Variable Eyepiece Projection and Prime Focus Adaptor 2" Deluxe

The 2" Deluxe Eyepiece Projection and Prime Focus Adaptor is a new achievement that offers superior possibilities for photographical applications in most telescopes. It consists of three separate parts that, when used separately, can be used for even more applications, making the TS VPA 2 Deluxe one of our most versatile adaptors. Mechanical quality and finish are excellent.

Telescope Connection

Your telescope must have a 2" focuser or 2" visual back. That's the only requirement to use this adaptor.

Advantages of the TS VPA2 Deluxe

- You can use 1.25" eyepieces with larger physical sizes than in most other projection adaptors, e.g. Plossl eyepieces up to 40mm or Vixen LV eyepieces, ....
Such eyepieces often do not fit into regular projection adaptors but are needed for some kinds of projection photography.

- The T2 adaptor can be moved freely over several centimeters, resulting in a zoom effect as described above in the regular variable adaptor. Also this allows you to move the T2 thread very close to the eyepiece lens, making the adaptor suitable for many compact digital cameras as well, not only SLR cameras.

- The eyepiece and the T2 adaptor are clamped firmly with a brass compression ring.

- The parts that make up the VPA 2 Deluxe can be used separately for additional applications (see below).

How to Assemble the Adaptor:

Step 1:
Screw the T2 on 2" adaptor onto the 2" on 1.25" adaptor with T2 thread. (parts one and two on the image above).

Step 2:
Insert a suitable projection eyepiece and lock it using the thumbscrew (or single thumbscrew) of the 2" on 1.25" adaptor.

Step 3:
Insert the 2" on T2 adaptor over the eyepiece and clamp it at the desired distance.

The proper order of the items needed for photography. The telescope would be on the left side, the camera on the right side.

Using the VPA 2 Deluxe with SLR Cameras:

The camera is attached to the VPA using a suitable T-ring (available separately) and if desired a T2 extension tube. The farther you extend the variable adaptor (using only the zoom function of the VPA itself or also adding extension tubes) you get a higher zoom factor with any given eyepiece. A too short distance may result in some vignetting towards the edge of the photographical field.

Recommended Eyepieces: 9mm through 15mm focal length

Using Cameras with Integrated Objective Lens (e.g. compact digital cameras)

For this kind of photography which came up only in the last few years an entirely different approach is needed, which is also the reason why most conventional projection adaptors cannot be used. The camera lens must be moved as closely as possible to the eyepiece lens. The eyepiece lens should be as large as possible to minimize vignetting. Follow-up adaptors are available for most compact digital cameras.

Recommended eyepieces:
- TS Super Plossl 25mm and 32mm
- TS SWM eyepieces
- TS WA eyepieces 1.25"

Tipp:

If your eyepiece has a rubber eyeguard you might want to remove it. Then it is often easier to move the 2"-T2 adaptor closer to the eyepiece.

2" on 1.25" Adaptors

You can choose between two high quality 2" on 1.25" adaptors. Both offer the same basic features:

Brass Compression Ring
The eyepieces are firmly held through a brass compression ring. This avoids scratches so you don't need to be afraid to use too much pressure to lock the eyepiece, and the mechanism works very well with most eyepieces.

2" Filter Thread
The adaptors have a standard 2" filter thread, so you can use 2" filters even though you are using 1.25" eyepieces. This always works with the longer TS 2-1-T2 adaptor. In the shorter TS 2-1 adaptor eyepieces with long 1.25" barrel might touch the filter, so you should try this out carefully the first time you use this adaptor with your eyepieces.

Differences
The left adaptor ( TS 2-1 ) is the classical 2" on 1.25" adaptor for visual use. Its effective optical length is about 10mm. The right adaptor ( TS 2-1-T2 ) has an additional male T2 thread, allowing you to use further adaptors to attach e.g. a camera. Example: If you attach suitable T2 extension tubes around the eyepiece you can use this adaptor as an eyepiece projection adaptor. The optical length of this adaptor is about 15mm.

2" Eyepiece Clamps (Visual Backs)

2" Eyepiece Clamp with SC Female Thread

If you wish to use 2" accessories on a Schmidt-Cassegrain, many Maksutovs and other telescopes with SC thread you can use this adaptor which resembles a 2" visual back with brass compression ring.

You then can use standard 2" star diagonals, adaptors, ...

Advantages Compared to Using an SC Star Diagonal:
Most SC star diagonals do not have the full possible clear aperture, but typically only about 37-38mm. With a 2" diagonal up to 47mm are possible. When using this adaptor you can then use a normal 2" diagonal, so you will reach larger fields of view and better illumination.

2" Eyepiece Clamp with T2 Female Thread

This adaptor can be used whenever your telescope has a T2 thread, but not real 2". Then you can use eyepieces with a larger field stop diameter than possible with 1.25" eyepieces. The full 2" field usually will not be illuminated, but you still improve illumination compared with 1.25".

You can also use this adaptor on a ( Baader ) coma corrector, so you can then use that corrector visually. But be careful because many Newtonian telescopes do not have a sufficient back focus to support this setup! This adaptor adds about 40mm length, a typical coma corrector adds another 2-5mm.

2" and 1.25" Extension Tubes

The ultra-short 35mm extension tube was made particularly for Newtonian telescopes that often have only 40mm focus travel.

With longer extension tubes you would not reach focus with some setups.

Most eyepieces fit entirely into the extension tube. In some cases a part of the eyepiece's barrel will still be visible, though, which cannot be avoided without making the extension tube longer.

This is of course no problem for practical use.

2" Extension Tubes (35mm, 50mm and 80mm Length)

In many telescopes the back focus is calculated to support additional accessories like a star diagonal, an SLR camera or other accessories. Then it is not possible to reach focus directly. Examples for this would be most refractors and Newtonians for photography.

Then you can use an extension tube to reach focus if you do not wish to use the supported accessories, e.g. if you want to use a refractor straight-through or use a photographical Newtonian visually.

Our extension tubes have a very high quality and excellent finish. They are anodized and have anti-reflection riffles inside.

The extension tubes have a 2" filter thread. The lengths given are the effective mechanical lengths once you put the tube into the focuser. The actual length of the tube is of course longer when you look at it outside a telescope.

Eyepieces are held firmly and securely with a brass compression ring.

The extension tubes have a safety undercut so that they in turn fit well into 2" focusers, even if these do not have a compression ring themselves.

1.25" Extension Tube (38mm Length)

A simple 1.25" extension tube with locking screw. The tube has a 1.25" filter thread and has a clear aperture of about 24mm.

Prime Focus Adaptor 2" on T-2

Prime Focus Adaptor with 2" Barrel and T2 Male Thread

A very frequently used adaptor for many photographical applications but also for other adaptations. The adaptor has a 2" outside diameter and a T2 (M42 x 0.75) thread. It accepts for instance standard T-rings for SLR cameras.

Safety Undercut
The safety undercut is a security measure to prevent the adaptor (and the possibly quite expensive camera) from dropping out of the focuser.

2" Filter Thread
The adaptor has a standard 2" filter thread, so you can use contrast boosting filters photographically.

T-2 Adaptor with M60 Thread

Newtonian telescopes commonly have a very short back focus distance, meaning that you often cannot reach focus with SLR cameras or other accessories. Fortunately there are many Newtonians whose focusers can be shortened easily:

The Adaptor is Compatible To:

... all focusers with M60 female thread when you unscrew the actual 2" clamp. Examples for this are most Newtonians from Celestron, Skywatcher, ... as well as GSO Newtonians with 2" Rack and Pinion focuser. The adaptor also fits many Vixen telescopes.

The optical length is only 3mm!

Examples of Use:

Multi Purpose Rotation System For Astro-Imaging

Variable rotation system that allows you to use 2" filters photographically

Example of use: The TS Rotation System TS ROT 5 used with the MTO 500 tele lens. With this adaptor you can use 2" filters despite the fact that the MTO normally has no provision for it.

Example: TS ROT 1. This is an adaptor with T2 female thread on one end and T2 male thread on the other end. In between sits the 2" filter thread. The Camera & filter adaptor (No. 2) can be rotated 360°.

The TS Rotation system is a multi purpose adaptor for astro imaging.

The adaptor has a length of only approx. 20mm (except ROT 7-9) , and can therefore be used even in many telescopes with limited back focus.

Applications:

Adaptation of a 2" filter between telescope and camera .... important in systems that regularly have no provision for 2" filters (e.g. MTO tele lenses)

Protection of the camera ... if you have installed a filter it will protect the camera from dust

Quick Release .... You can attach or remove the camera within seconds

360° Rotation ... allows you to rotate the camera easily for the desired image frame

2" Adaptation ... the base adaptor of each TS ROT resembles a short profile 2" clamp. You can use normal 2" accessories (but only a part of their barrel will be held) or with a 1.25" adaptor also 1.25" accessories.

Each TS ROT unit consists of one base adaptor and one Camera & Filter adaptor.

Important: Please be careful not to confuse the T2 thread (M42x0.75) with the M42 thread (M42x1)! They both have the same diameter but a different pitch!

A Popular Nebular Filter for Deep Sky Imaging

The Baader 2" UHC nebular filter is an excellent compromise between stray light suppression and image brightness. Exposure times remain fairly short, but the background brightness caused by light pollution is reduced enormously.
