This 5-lens eyepiece design combines the viewing comfort and large corrected field of Erfle-design eyepieces with the advantages of the popular Plossl design.

The fifth lens element offers a better sharpness and colour correction throughout the visible field and also results in a flatter focal plane.

Probably the most important feature is the optimized eye relief both in long and short focal length eyepieces of this type. The eyepieces have a scratch-resistant broadband multicoating. The robust coating meets US Military standards.

The 5 lens Eudiascopic eyepieces form a new eyepiece design in its own right - more than just a slightly modified Plossl design!

The Genuine Orthos offer an excellent multi-coating. Other, similar looking eyepieces often have a more simple coating.

The classical orthoscopic eyepiece design has several advantages compared with Plossl eyepieces or wide angle eyepieces. With its small number of lenses and only four glass-to-air surfaces (less than that is not considered useful) an excellent light throughput and contrast is the result. You get a clear, undistorted image.

Baader Genuine Orthos are particularly well suited for viewing the moon and the planets. On-axis sharpness is better than in conventional Plossls.

Applications:
- Lunar and planetary observing - best possible on-axis sharpness is required
- Finding out the limiting magnitude of a telescope - due to the eyepiece's enormous transmission
- double star observations
- eyepiece projection photography (Webcams, CCD cameras or SLR cameras)

"Phantom" Multi-Coating:
Baader GENUINE Orthos have a particularly good multi-coating which sets them apart from other, simpler Orthos and many other eyepiece lines. They have an excellent full multi-coating, i.e. a very effective anti-reflective multi-layer coating on each glass-to-air surface. This brings a better contrast and image brightness than a simpler coating.

Protective Cases

Baader HYPERION Eyepieces were designed both for visual and photographical applications and excel in both fields. They offer an excellent performance in all fields of amateur astronomy at a sensational price.

Properties - Visual Use:

68° Apparent Field of View	A comfortable and large field of view - easily visible even with eyeglasses. A field of view of 68 degrees has been tested as being ideal for astronomical observations. It is the largest field of view that can be viewed without strain and without turning your eyes.
Excellent Image Sharpness	Both on axis and over the entire visible field these eyepieces offer an excellent image sharpness. Even short focal ratio Newtonians at an extreme f/4 offer great, sharp stars over the entire field.
Very Good Light Throughput and Contrast	Hyperion eyepieces have an excellent multi-layer coating on each glass-to-air surface. Blackened lens edges and a blackened interior of the eyepiece body further reduce internal reflections and ghost images. The result is a bright image, no internal reflections and a very good contrast.
No Kidney-Beaning	Cheap eyepieces and too extreme wide angle eyepieces often suffer from "Kidney-Beaning". When you move the head only slightly a black, kidney-shaped shadow will cover a part of the field of view. This effect is avoided in the Baader Hyperion eyepieces by use of oversized lenses.
Suitable for Use in Binocular Viewers	Hyperion eyepieces are very well suited for binocular viewing. With an interpupillary distance of 56mm or more you will have no trouble looking through both eyepieces at the same time without getting into a conflict with your nose. A low focal plane allows you to reach focus more easily.
1.25" and 2" Dual Barrel	Hyperion eyepieces do not only have a 1.25" barrel. The lower part of the eyepiece body is built as an additional 2" barrel. For use in 2" star diagonals you should check that the 1.25" barrel doesn't hit the mirror, though.
One Eyepiece - Two Focal Lengths	By removing the 1.25" barrel with the first group of lenses you turn the Hyperion eyepiece into a 2" wide angle eyepiece with the standard M48 filter thread. A much lower magnification and larger true field of view is the result. You should know that the optical quality suffers by this, though! The eyepiece can then be used as an eyepiece for finding objects, but is not recommended for regular observations.

Simple and Strong Screw-On Camera Adaptation	Each Hyperion eyepiece has an M43x0.75 and an M54 thread near the eye lens. We offer nearly any conceivable adaptation on T2 or your camera's filter thread. Just let us know which exact camera you have and we will suggest the best adaptation....... E-mail
Suitable For Heavy Cameras	The eyepiece body is made of metal, as are the precise threads. You can attach even heavy cameras securely.
One Eyepiece - Two Magnifications	By removing the 1.25" barrel with the first group of lenses you turn the Hyperion eyepiece into a 2" wide angle eyepiece with the standard M48 filter thread. A much lower magnification and larger true field of view is the result, well suited for taking images of extended nebulae and galaxies. In the standard configuration you have an excellent projection eyepiece for moon and the planets.
A Large Useful Field of View	The eye lens of the Hyperion eyepieces has been designed for largest possible useful field. Vignetting in digital cameras with fixed lens is drastically reduced.

Protective Cases

The extension tubes are inserted between the Barlow element and the eyepiece proper.

In our opinion these extension rings cannot replace an eyepiece set, though. Changing the focal length is too cumbersome to do all the time. The rings are meant primarily for the fine adjustment of your existing eyepieces to a desired focal length.

Four Possible Focal Lengths - Per Eyepiece!
By changing the distance between the Barlow element and the eyepiece proper you can increase the magnification of your Hyperion eyepieces. Optical quality remains largely the same, but we recommend not to use more extension tubes than listed in this table:

Calculation Example: Hyperion 17mm
With a telescope focal length of 1000mm the 17mm Hyperion offers a magnification of 58x.
With the Hyp Ring 28 magnification is raised by 40%: ........................ 58x + 40% = 81x
This reduces the focal length of the Hyperion 17mm by the factor 0.71 ..... 17mm x 0.71 = 12mm

HYPERION Wide Angle Zoom Eyepiece 8-24mm - 1.25"

Here you can well see the adjustable rubber eyeguard on the top of the eyepiece.

A high quality zoom eyepiece for demanding users who prefer to own one zoom eyepiece instead of a large selection of separate fixed focal length eyepieces. At 8mm focal length the Hyperion zoom has the same large field of view as the regular Hyperions. It narrows down to about the field of view of a Super Plossl at 24mm. This is still a lot more than many simpler zoom eyepieces!

Micro Guide Illuminated "Reticle" Eyepiece

A 12.5mm orthoscopic eyepiece (Abbe design) with a fine etched measurement glass plate. There are innumerable applications, like:

- highest precision tracking. Indirect tracking (e.g. of a moving comet) is also possible
- easy use of guide stars in off-axis guiders - you do not need to center the guide star in the eyepiece
- measuring angles and distances of double stars
- measuring the exact focal length of a telescope (tolerance only about 0.3%)
