Telescope-Service binoculars combine a modern design, an outstanding mechanical and optical quality and - most importantly - extremely crisp and contrasty images.

As General Distributor we get these binoculars directly from the factory - we can therefore offer our binoculars at very low prices.

One of the most important factors of a pair of binoculars is described by the so-called twilight factor. It is supposed to inform about how bright an image is. You can easily calculate the twilight factor for any pair of binoculars yourself:

Twilight Factor = Square root of ( Lens Diameter x Magnification )
Example: 10x50 binoculars => Twilight factor = SQRT ( 50 x 10 ) = 22.4

In our opinion the twilight factor is a misleading figure, though: It doesn't really tell much about what you can expect. A very powerful 7x50 has the same twilight factor as an overly dim 12x30.

We prefer a different, much more simple figure: The diameter of the exit pupil.

The exit pupil is the cross-section of the light that leaves the binoculars at the rear. When you hold your binoculars in front of a bright background and look at the eyepieces from a distance you will see a bright circle - the exit pupil. You can see it on the image to the right.

How To Calculate The Diameter of the Exit Pupil:

Exit Pupil Diameter = Lens Diameter / Magnification
Example: 10x50 binoculars => Exit Pupil Diameter = 50 / 10 = 5mm

How to Interpret the Exit Pupil Diameter:

The human pupil opens up to a diameter of up to 7mm at night - on average. This limits the maximum useful exit pupil diameter to that same 7mm - a pair of 10x80 binoculars, for instance, would have an exit pupil diameter of 8mm. Some of its light would be wasted on the iris of your eyes.

Which Exit Pupil Diameter To Choose:

6-7mm ... very bright images. Typical binoculars of this category are 7x50 binoculars. This is very useful for nighttime observing and in the twilight.

4-5mm ... good compromise. Bright image and at the same time usable during the daytime.

up to 4mm ... primarily suited for daytime use.

Exception: ... Large binoculars beyond 80mm lens diameter tend to have an exit pupil around 4mm. Due to their large aperture and consequently large light-gathering power they are still very well suited for nighttime use.
