Newtonians

Our Newtonian telescopes all have an excellent value for money. The optical and mechanical quality is another very important point that we take very seriously. All Newtonian mirrors have a robust coating that will effectively prevent aging effects of the reflective coatings.

All of our Newtonian telescopes have a focuser that will accept 1.25" standard accessories. Some of the larger units even have a 2" focuser specifically made for astronomical imaging and rich field observations. A 1.25" focuser (as opposed to the cheap 24.5mm focusers often sold on small telescopes) is absolutely necessary if you want to have the option of buying further high-quality accessories. With a 24.5mm focuser you will never be able to use the telescope's full potential.

Why buy a Newtonian telescope? Newtonian telescopes offer the best possible value for your money. If your interest lies mostly in Galaxies, gas nebulae and other faint objects beyond our solar system a Newtonian telescope would probably be the best choice

TS Newtonian 76/700 on a simple alt-azimuth mount

If you are looking for your first telescope you should consider this one. In many cases beginners do not yet know whether they will stick to amateur astronomy, or whether this hobby is not for them at all. Spending several hundred Euro for something you do not know whether you will use it at all is not a good idea, obviously. This is where this telescope comes in.

Observing with the 76/700 Newtonian Reflector:
This telescope will offer beautiful views of many objects, both within and beyond our solar system. The precisely figured primary mirror will show you many open clusters as they really are: Hundreds of pinpoint stars huddled close together in the blackness of surrounding space. 76mm of aperture are enough to see bright galaxies and gas nebulae like the Great Orion Nebula or the ring nebula in Lyra. As long as you do not expect such colourful images as those you can see on the internet (taken with the three billion Euro Hubble Space Telescope or other professional equipment) you will enjoy countless hours of awe under the night sky.

Within our solar system you will also find plenty of fascinating objects. You will discover the phases of Venus, the cratery surface of the moon, the bands in Jupiter's atmosphere and, of course, Saturn's famous rings.

The Alt-Azimuth Mount:
A simple but efficient design that allows you to easily point the telescope wherever you like. The aluminium tripod is adjustable in height. We recommend this telescope to children because of its ease of use. Only the refractor 70/800 is easier to use than this telescope.

Recommended Magnifications: 28x to 120x

TSNT769Auszug.jpg (3968 Byte)

The 1,25" Focuser:
One of the major drawbacks of most telescopes in this price range is that they are equipped with a 24.5mm focuser only. Most good quality accessories are only available for 1.25" focusers, which means that you would not be able to upgrade your telescope by purchasing better accessories.

Our 76/700 Newtonian features a proper 1.25" focuser. That way you can use good filters and eyepieces. You may even try taking a few snapshots of the moon and planets.

TSNT769Zub.jpg (3353 Byte)

Complete Set of Accessories:
The Newtonian comes complete with a set of accessories to get started:

- 5x24 finderscope
- 1.25" Huygens eyepieces: 20mm (35x), 12.5mm (56x), 4mm (175x - usually not recommended)
- 2x barlow lens (not suitable for use with 4mm eyepiece)
- erecting lens for terrestrial use

Aperture 114mm
Focal length 900mm

Newtonian Reflector - 114mm Aperture - 900mm Focal Length

If there ever was a "classical" entry-level telescope, this is it. It combines a respectable aperture of 114mm with a properly dimensioned equatorial mount. All kinds of amateur astronomy - be it observing the planets, deep sky objects or even astro-imaging - are possible with this allround telescope.

There are many different brands of this classical telescope, and sometimes they vary widely when it comes to accessories, optical or mechanical quality. Some of these telescopes feature the old 24.5mm focusers that essentially cut you off from all higher quality accessories.

Our TS Newtonians all have a standard 1.25" focuser that enables you to use nearly any accessories you like.

Observing with the 114/900
114mm aperture means a lot of light for your eyes. Many objects beyond our solar system are within the reach of this telescope. You will see why M-57 is called the "ring nebula"; M-13 is dissolved into single stars near the edge. In the constellation of Virgo you will be able to see various small galaxies.

The relatively small secondary mirror means a very good contrast and sharpness on the moon and the planets. You will see the atmospheric bands on Jupiter and Saturn's famous rings. The relatively large aperture allows for the use of colour filters - you will still have enough light for your eyes.

Astro Imaging
The 1.25" focuser not only enables you to use standard accessories for visual use, but also for astro imaging. With our projection adaptors you will be able to take impressive images of the moon and the planets.

The easiest entry into astronomical photography is to put a digital camera behind the eyepiece of your telescope. We offer adaptors for most digital cameras.

Specs:
Precisely figured primary mirror - diameter (aperture) 114mm, focal length 900mm, focal ratio f/7.9.
Diameter of the secondary mirror is 22mm.

Recommended Magnifications: 23x to 170x

1.25" Focuser:
Even though everyone agrees that a 1.25§ focuser is a necessity many cheap telescopes still have the old 0.96" models. Our TS Newtonian of course has a true 1.25" focuser, allowing for the use of all high-class accessories.3

6x30 Finderscope:
Not just cheap plastic, but a decent quality finder. You will notice the difference when you try to find an object.
Sturdy Equatorial Mount:
The mount holds our TS 114/900 Newtonian almost without vibrations. It is well suited for visual use and your first steps in the grand field of astro-imaging. One single screw needs to be removed in order to detach the mount from the adjustable height tripod.

The mount comes complete with slow motion cables in both axes. A tracking motor is available as an optional extra, allowing for more comfortable observations and astro-imaging.
Complete Set of Accessories:
- Kellner 25mm (36x)
- Kellner 10mm (91x)
- 2x Barlow Lens (doubles the magnification)
- Moon filter

GSO Newtonian - Aperture 150mm - Focal Length 750mm

A multi-purpose advanced telescope for beginners and advanced observers alike. Excellent image quality.

GSO Newtonian 150mm aperture on Sky View equatorial mount - an excellent entry level telescope

GSO Newtonian 150mm Aperture, 750mm Focal Length

This GSO Newtonian is an excellent multi-purpose telescope.

It combines a very good mechanical quality with an exceptional optical quality. Moon and the planets are depicted full of contrast and detail. You will be able to see Saturn's Cassini division and details in Jupiter's cloud belts.

150mm aperture offer a lot of light for serious deep sky observing. Countless gas nebulae, star clusters and galaxies are within reach of this telescope. The Great Andromeda Galaxy will be seen as an extended cloud with its satellite galaxies.

In our opinion the optics of GSO Newtonians are better than those of Chinese make. The parabolical mirrors are very precisely figured and have a smooth surface for optimum contrast.
Astro Imaging With The GSO Newtonian 150/750mm

For photographing gas nebulae and galaxies we recommend the T2 adaptor for the GSO Newtonian: The "GS-Fokaladapter". Just remove the 1.25" eyepiece holder and the small ring that connects it to the focuser and attach the T2 adaptor. Then all you will need is a normal T-ring for your SLR camera.

For the moon and the planets you need higher magnifications. This is achieved by eyepiece projection. The TS PAT adaptor is attached to the GS Fokaladapter. You can then insert many standard 1.25" eyepieces (orthoscopic eyepieces for best results) and once again attach your SLR camera with a standard T-ring.

We also offer adaptations for most digital cameras. Please request the adaptation for your specific camera.

Two Mounts Available

The GSO Sky View is a sturdy and low-cost mount for this telescope. It holds the 150mm Newtonian with good stability for all kinds of amateur astronomical uses. Unlike some other small mounts it already has many of the features of a larger mount:

- good quality of make. Smooth motion in both axes.
- solid adjustable height aluminium tripod
- good stability for use even in slightly windy environments
- good upgradability (polar scope, tracking motor, quick release saddle plate, ...)

The mount is recommended for visual use as well as short exposure astro-imaging. .............
Sky View - Further Information

The TS Astro-5 DX (left image) is quite a bit more sturdy than the SkyView. It can be used without reservations for long exposure astro-imaging and offers enough power reserves for several heavy accessories (guide scope, camera, ...). These are a few of the Astro-5's features that make it well suited for astro-imaging:

- illuminated polar scope is included
- dual axis motor drive available as upgrade
- more sophisticated motor drives with PEC etc. are also available
- the mount can even be upgraded with GoTo
- massive build, good stability. No plastic parts are used in crucial places
- strong steel tube tripod for extra stability

The TS Astro-5 DX is a bit overdimensioned for purely visual use. It might be advisable to choose this mount if you want to observe under extremely windy conditions, though. The mount's primary purpose is as a solid base for long exposure astro-imaging. .... Astro-5 DX - Further Information

GSO Photo- and Wide Field Newtonian - Aperture 200mm - Focal Length 800mm

A compact rich field Newtonian with exceptional optical quality. As a result the telescope is perfectly suited not only for photographical but also for visual use. Visually it can even be used for the planets and the moon.
In our opinion this telescope is of better optical and mechanical quality than the usual Chinese telescopes.

GSN 200/800mm Optical Tube Assembly (OTA) with Crayford focuser, multi-coated finderscope and primary mirror cooling fan.

The Celestron ADM is a warmly recommended mount for the GSN 2008. It offers enough power reserves for heavy accessories (additional counterweight recommended).
Note the excellent green multi-coating of the finderscope!

GSO Wide Field Newtonian - 200/800mm

Most opticians worldwide will agree: The shorter the focal length of a Newtonian primary mirror at a given diameter, the more difficult it is to make. This is probably the main reason why there are not many f/4 Newtonians around despite their obvious advantages for astro-imaging!

GSO is famous for their excellent quality optics which are in our opinion much better than the Chinese standard. For us GSO is one of only two manufacturers in this price range (the other being Orion Optics) who we trust in when it comes to f/4 parabolical primary mirrors!

This makes the GSO 200/800mm Newtonian not only suited for photography and for observing deep sky objects (Galaxies, nebulae, ...), but also for observing the moon and the planets.

Visual Use

Because of this telescopes exceptional optical quality and the optimized secondary mirror holder (very thin spider vanes for minimal diffraction effects) image contrast is very high, even for planets and moon. In our opinion image sharpness is better than that of many other telescopes of equal aperture.

Its primary use is of course deep sky observations, i.e. galaxies, gas nebulae, star clusters etc. With its great aperture of 200mm the telescope offers an enormous light gathering power. At the same time it is very compact due to its short focal length. Higher magnifications can be achieved using modern eyepieces (recommendation: Baader Hyperion and Vixen LVW).

Astro-Imaging

This is the strongest point of this wonderful telescope. With its very short focal ratio of f/4 exposure times are much shorter than with longer focal ratios (about 2/3 of that with a classical f/5 Newtonian). This makes the telescope perfectly suited for deep sky imaging. You can use strong filters to boost contrast and will nonetheless have relatively short exposure times.

Aside from the optical quality the mechanics must also be good for successful astro-imaging. With its excellent quality ultra-smooth 2" Crayford focuser this telescope offers a lot of comfort.

For deep sky astro-imaging we recommend to use the Baader Coma Corrector. This will also add a few millimeters to the back-focus of this telescope to accomodate SLR cameras.

Very Precise And Massive 2" Crayford Style Focuser

The focuser is an important part of any telescope. If the focuser is good the telescope's full potential can be used. If the focuser is not good you might have trouble attaining a sharp image, no matter how good the optics would be!

For the GSN 2008 we have used an excellent 2" Crayford style focuser. These focusers have zero image shift and move very smoothly. With a bit of experience you can do such small focus movements as 0.08mm! .... Further Information on the Focuser

Thin Secondary Mirror Spider Vanes For Minimized Diffraction Effects

For maximum contrast the secondary mirror spider vanes have been optimized to be as thin as possible without losing stability. Many Newtonians have quite thick spider vanes which results in a loss of contrast and image sharpness.

Good Quality 8x50 Finderscope

To go with this excellent quality telescope we have decided to use a very good quality fully-multi-coated achromatic finderscope rather than a simpler unit. With this finderscope you will easily be able to locate and center the desired objects - many deep sky objects are even directly visible in this 50mm finderscope.

Primary Mirror Cooling Fan

Instead of chosing exotic and incredibly expensive mirror substrates we have chosen to equip this telescope with a primary mirror cooling fan to accelerate cool-down time to ambient temperature. Until a mirror is properly cooled down it will create currents of warm air that will deteriorate the image - no matter which mirror substrate is used. Only after the mirror has cooled down this effect stops.

Parabolical Primary Mirror

The very precisely figured parabolical primary mirror of this telescope is not made of cheap float glass, but rather of BK-7 optical glass that is free of internal stress. Thermic properties are generally better than float glass. At the same time the mirror is way more affordable than more exotic primary mirror substrates that in our opinion bring hardly any advantage at all (see comments under "Primary Mirror Cooling Fan").

For easier collimation the mirrors are properly center marked.

GSO - Universal - Newtonian - Aperture 200mm - Focal Length 1000mm
A universal and very good quality Newtonian telescope both for deep sky and high quality planetary viewing.
In our opinion this telescope offers a higher mechanical and optical quality than other comparable instruments.

GSN 200/1000mm Optical Tube Assembly (OTA) with Crayford focuser, multi-coated finderscope and primary mirror cooling fan. The short extension tube is used to reach focus with normal 2" eyepieces. That way there is sufficient back-focus for SLR cameras.

Der GSN 2001 ist auf der Astro-5 noch solide montiert. Diese Kombination ist ideal für Sternfreunde, die einen preiswerten Einstieg wollen und doch nicht auf eine anspruchsvolle Ausstattung verzichten wollen.

GSO " Universal " Newtonian - 200/1000mm

During the past couple of years - ever since prices for telescopes have considerably dropped due to production in the far east - the 200mm Newtonian with a focal length of 1000mm has become an increasingly popular choice for amateurs. We fully agree that a telescope of that aperture and focal length can be counted among the most versatile multi-purpose telescopes in existence.

The GSO Newtonian 200/1000mm is a new telescope in this range. It adds a package of extra features that are in our opinion unparalleled in this class: An ultra-smooth Crayford focuser for much smoother focusing motion and zero image shift. A cooling fan for quicker cool-down. A multi-coated finderscope.

Visual Use

The GSN2001 with its "classical" focal ratio of f/5 offers an excellent image sharpness for moon and planets.

- only 25% linear obstuction (= 6.25% of the surface)
- thin secondary spider vanes for max. contrast
- excellent quality parabolical primary mirror

These features make this telescope a top-performer for planetary observing.

At the same time its large aperture of 200mm (8") offer lots of light for serious deep sky observing. Thousands of gas nebulae, galaxies and star clusters are within reach of this telescope. Several galaxies will begin to show their spiral structure.

Fast Newtonians require complex and expensive eyepieces. At f/5 standard eyepieces will offer a good performance already. Baader Hyperion eyepieces offer top performance even for the most demanding users.

Astro-Imaging

The GSN 2001 is not only a visual multi-talent, but also extremely well suited for astro-imaging. You can take high resolution images of the moon and the planets with a powerful Barlow lens and the Philips ToUCam (German presentation).

But you can also take excellent images of deep sky objects. For this we recommend to use the Baader Coma Corrector.

The focuser is not just a cheap plastic focuser and also not a rack and pinion design with plenty of image shift, but rather a smooth, zero shift Crayford focuser.

Photographically Illuminated Field

The GSN 2001 illuminates a field of 10mm at 100%. This is the typical illumination of a Newtonian optimized for a small secondary mirror obstruction.

The useful photographical field is about 20mm in diameter. This is more than sufficient for typical CCD cameras and is even enough for digital cameras like the Canon EOS 350.

If you prefer a larger illuminated field for larger format photography (classical 35mm format) we can exchange the secondary mirror for a 63mm mirror at an extra charge (see price list below).

Thermic properties are generally better than float glass. At the same time the mirror is way more affordable than more exotic primary mirror substrates that in our opinion bring hardly any advantage at all (see comments under "Primary Mirror Cooling Fan").
